Representative Reference Sources for Spanish

When doing a search for Spanish resources, reference books such as dictionaries, handbooks, manuals and encyclopedias are great sources for background information on any topic.

 

Encyclopedia Britannica                                                                                 Online

Online version of the popular print encyclopedia, it is a great source for basic information in multiple subject areas.

 

Feminist Encyclopedia of Spanish Literature                                       R 860.99287 F329 2002

Treats Spanish literature from a feminist perspective, discussing female writers, important topics, characters, etc, along with how male writers portrayed women.

 

Historical Dictionary of Modern Spain, 1700-1988                               R 946.003 H673 1990

This dictionary covers "political, governmental, diplomatic, institutional, cultural and social and military history."  Bibliographical references in Spanish and English are included for each entry.

For the latest information from authoritative sources, use scholarly journals. Online library databases like Academic Search Complete and JSTOR are general databases that contain information from multiple disciplines. The following databases are other examples, typically more specific in nature, that contain information geared towards this discipline.

Indexes Latin American Journals in the sciences and humanities, from the 1970s to the present.

 

Dow Jones Factiva

This database provides articles from leading business publications, as well newspapers and popular magazines and journals worldwide. Change language option to Spanish for best results.

 

Economia y Negocios

Covers over 300 periodicals from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Spain, the United State, etc. Records date back to the 1980s and are in Spanish or Portuguese.

Contains full text of a number of scholarly Spanish language journals covering the disciplines of business and economics, political science, history, and others.

 

Literary Resource Center

OmniFile provides citations, abstracts, and full text of scholarly journals and magazines.  Choose the Social Sciences subject area for articles on Spanish culture.

 

Project Muse

Associated with JSTOR, this database contains nearly 250 scholarly journals covering most of the Humanities and Social Sciences, including Iberian Studies or Latin American Studies.

This is the official site for the Spanish newspaper “El Mundo”. Note: If you access this page through Google, you can use the search engine’s translate feature to view this newspaper in English.
