Representative Reference Sources for Environmental Science

When doing a search for information in Environmental Science, start by establishing a basic understanding of the terms and concepts in the field.  Reference books such as dictionaries, handbooks, manuals and encyclopedias are great sources for this type of information.

 

Encyclopedia Britannica                                                                                                 Online

An online version of the traditional print encyclopedia, it is a great resource for basic information in multiple subject areas.

 

Encyclopedia of Globalization                                                                                     R 303.482 E56

Topics include issues from history, economics, environmentalism, political and cultural disciplines. The 1st volume includes a list of entries and a reader’s guide organizing entries on related topics.

 

Environmental Encyclopedia                                                                                       R 363.7 E609 2003

A great encyclopedia dedicated to environmental issues, concerns, and people who have made an impact in this field of study. 

 

Environmental Contaminant Reference Databook                                       R 363.738 P898e 1997

This reference tool provides entries for known environmental contaminants and the principle effects they have on the environment.  The synonym index is very helpful in finding the proper contaminant.

 

Facts on File Dictionary of Environmental Science                                              R 333.7 W984f 2007

Defines important terms in the field and illustrates its relationship to agriculture, biology, engineering, law, medicine and other disciplines.

 

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics                                                                 R 540 C911 2004

This is a standard reference resource for scientists, engineers and students and provides broad coverage of data commonly used in the physical sciences.

 

Macmillan Encyclopedia of Chemistry                                                                     R 540.3 M167 1997

This encyclopedia presents over 700 articles at a level appropriate for non-specialists. 

 

Notable Natural Disasters                                                                                            R 551.5 N899 2007

Addresses both the scientific and social aspects of natural disasters, organized by type. Covers 100 specific events worldwide.

 

Dictionary of the Environment                                                                                  R 574.503 A416d 1991

This dictionary covers the broad scope of the environment including entries for terms, individuals, and events.

An alphabetical glossary of terms commonly used in plant identification with accompanying line drawings.

Resources for Finding Articles on Environmental Science

For the latest information from authoritative sources, use scholarly journals. Some online library databases like Academic Search Complete are general databases that contain information from multiple disciplines. The following databases are other examples, typically more specific in nature, that contain information geared towards this discipline.

 

ACS Web Editions

Full text online access to journals published by the American Chemical Society.  It offers a variety of methods to search in one or multiple journals.

 

Annual Review of Biochemistry

Indexing annual reviews for biochemistry from 1930-present, it includes some full-text but is mostly abstracts.

 

Annual Review of Physical Chemistry

Also an index of reviews, this resource deals with physical chemistry covering dates from 1950-present.

 

Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics

An index of reviews concerning the fields of Ecology, Evolution and Systematics, it covers 1970-present.

 

Annual Review of Microbiology

Like the others, this resource indexes reviews concerning Microbiology from 1947-present.

 

Wiley InterScience (Formerly Blackwell Synergy)

Browse by specific subject area, like Earth and Environmental Science or use the advanced search option to find articles on a specific topic.

Environment Complete

Covers all subject areas, including ecology, geography, waste management, environmental law and others. Contains the full text for over 600 journals.

 

OMNIFILE/MEGA

A multi-disciplinary database, you can narrow down your search to a specific subject area including Applied Science and Technology, Biology and Agriculture, and General Sciences.

This site indexes e-journals from a variety of different disciplines. These international journals, may not be in English. Full-text is usually only available through a subscription to the journal.

 

EBSCOHost- Green File

A free resource from EBSCO, it indexes 600 titles covering law, science, economics, industry, etc: all the interdisciplinary aspects of environmental studies. Titles vary from scholarly publications to those with a more popular aim.

 

The Ecological Society of America

The home site for this organization has membership information, along with current issues and trends within this profession.

 

NASA Earth Observatory

Displays images from NASA sattelites illustrating climate change, natural disasters, and the wonderful features of Planet Earth. Featured articles and other scientific writings help to explain just want you are looking at, and its ramifications.

 

UNEP- Atlas of Our Changing Environment

Provides satellite imagary comparing various points on earth from 20-30 years ago to today, Illustrating enviornmental changes. Images can be downloaded in various formats or saved to powerpoint.

 

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

This site is the official site of the Environmental Protection Agency. This site provides data and articles concerning the American environment.

 

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

This site is the official site of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The site provides articles and information on key issues concerning our environment.
