Representative Reference Sources for Criminal Justice

When doing a literature search on Criminal Justice, you will need to first establish a basic understanding of the terms and concepts in the field.  Reference books such as dictionaries, handbooks, manuals and encyclopedias are great sources for this type of information.

 

Black’s Law Dictionary                                                                                    R 340.03 B631 2004

Contains legal terms and their definitions.

 

Crime in the United States 2004                                                                R 364.0973 U58 2004

The library keeps the most recent copies of this yearly publication, which reports the crime statistics for that year from the United States and its possessions.

                                                                               

Dictionary of Crime                                                                                         R 364.03 D5546 1992

This dictionary terms both technical and slang terms associated with crime and the areas of criminal justices and law enforcement.

 

Encyclopedia of American Law Enforcement                                        R 363.2 N565e 2007

Covers the history and current issues in American law enforcement, including law enforcement agencies, biographies of important individuals, and descriptions of important events.

 

Encyclopedia of Criminology and Deviant Behavior                           R 364.03 E567 2001

This four-volume set provides articles that cover major topics in the study of deviance.  Each volume focuses a broad area of deviance with articles exploring subcategories within the area.

 

Encyclopedia of Murder and Violent Crime                                          R 364.1523 E56 2003

Within this source, the social, cultural, and other aspects of murder and violent crime are discussed along with those who have most infamously perpetrated these deeds.

 

Forensic Science                                                                                               R 363.25 F715 2009

Entries cover the various areas of forensic science, from ballistics to blood spatter. Important cases are also included, along with relevent concepts and investigative tools.

 

Gale Virtual Reference Library                                                                   Online

Provides online access to a number of Gale’s resources including: Crime and Punishment: Essential Primary Sources.

 

Great American Trials                                                                                     R 347.73 G786 1994

Contains information on 200 trails spanning from the 1600s to the 1990s.

 

International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences                              R 300.3 I61 2008

This nine volume set covers various concepts related to the social sciences including cultural and historical events that have relevance to the field.

Criminal Justice Periodical Index [CJPI]

Contains citations and abstracts for 220 journals, including full-text for 65 of the journals.

 

OMNIFILE/MEGA

Choose the Social Science or Legal subject area for citations, abstracts and full-text of scholarly journals and magazines dealing with criminal justice.

 

Legal Collection

A collection of peer-reviewed law journals, documents and case studies. Some full-text is included.
