Representative Reference Sources for Computer Science

When doing a search for information in computer science, start by establishing a basic understanding of the terms and concepts in the field.  Reference books such as dictionaries, handbooks, manuals, and encyclopedias are great sources for this type of information. 

 

Dictionary of Computer and Internet Words                                        R 004.03 D554 2001

This dictionary contains entries that explain the technology without a lot of technological jargon.

 

Dictionary of Computing                                                                               R 004.03 D554 2008

Contains entries relating to computer science and computers.

 

Encyclopedia Britannica                                                                                 Online

Online version of the popular print encyclopedia, it is a great source for basic information in multiple subject areas.

 

Encyclopedia of Computer Science                                                          R 004.03 E566 2000

This standard reference work on computer, computing, and computer science offers more than 600 entries within 2000 pages.

 

Encyclopedia of Computer and Computer History                             R 004.03 E568 2001

This two-volume set provides a thorough history of computers and computer-related technology.  Each of the over 600 entries are accompanied by a list of references.

 

Encyclopedia of Information Ethics and Security                 R 174.9004 E56 2008

Topics address a wide range of areas affected by computer technology, including: education, the workplace, health, privacy, intellectual property, identity, computer crime, cyber terrorism, etc.

 

Encyclopedia of Information Systems                                                     R 004.03 E569 2003

This four-volume comprehensive set spans the whole of Information Systems, including many articles by experts in their respective fields. 

 

A Glossary of NetSpeak and TextSpeak                                                 R 004.03 C957g 2004

This dictionary covers the jargon entering the English language with the rise of the Internet and cell phone technology. 

 

Oxford Reference Online                                                                             Online

This electronic resource contains the full-texts of over 100 books of general reference including many in the Computing field.

 

 


 

Finding Books and Other Items in the Library

To find books and other resources on art in our general collection, start by going to the ALEX online catalog and searching by subject.  You can refine your search results by viewing the Related Subjects and associated subheadings.  If a subject search is not successful, searching by keyword broadens your search and retrieves more information.

Resources for Finding Articles on Computer Science

For the latest information from authoritative sources, use scholarly journals.  Online library databases like Academic Search Complete and JSTOR are examples of general databases that contain information from multiple disciplines. The following databases are other examples, typically more specific in nature, that contain information geared towards this discipline. 

 

ACM Digital Library

This an exhaustive electronic source for information on computing machinery, along with an archive of journals, magazines, conference proceedings and other ACM’s publications.

 

Wiley InterScience (Formerly Blackwell Synergy)

You can browse by specific subject areas, like Information science and Computing or use the advanced search option to find articles on a specific topic.

Computers & Applied Sciences Complete

CASC covers the research and development computing and applied sciences with citations from over 1,800 academic journals and other sources. It also contains full text from over 700 sources.

 

Omnifile/Mega

This multi-disciplinary database collection contains the indexing, abstracts and selected full text covering various subject areas including General Science and Applied Science and Technology.
