Representative Reference Sources for Communication Studies

When doing a literature search in Communication, start by establishing a basic understanding of the terms and concepts in the field. Reference works such as dictionaries, handbooks, manuals and encyclopedias are great sources for this type of information.

Encyclopedia Britannica                                                                                               Online

An online version of the popular print encyclopedia, it is a great source for basic information in multiple subject areas.

 

Encyclopedia of Communication and Information                                             R 302.2 E56 2002

An interdisciplinary four volume set that provides articles covering a variety of topics in communications and information. Entries range from biographies to extended topical essays.

 

Encyclopedia of Globalization                                                                                     R 303.482 E56

Topics include issues from history, economics, environmentalism, political and cultural disciplines. The 1st volume includes a list of entries and a reader’s guide organizing entries on related topics.

 

Encyclopedia of New Media                                                                                        R 302.23 E56 2003

This encyclopedia contains articles covering various issues in communication, including those dealing with the Internet and other emerging technologies.

As the title states, this encyclopedia covers communication and the technologies used to convey thoughts, ideas, etc since the beginning.

As the title suggests this source is arranged as an encyclopedia, containing entries on the various topics and people who have influenced the mass media in the United States.

Entries cover individuals, programs and topics related to television in Britain, Canada, Australia, and the United States. Most entries have a list of suggested “further readings”.

 

St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture                                                            Online

This is the ebook version of the five volume set. "Includes more than 2,700 signed essays ranging from 500 to 2,500 words... Entries include subject-specific bibliographies and, where appropriate, photographs and textual cross-references to related essays."

With 35,000 definitions, this is the definitive dictionary for technical and slang terms used in the fields of media and communication.

For the latest information from authoritative sources, use scholarly journals. Online library databases like Academic Search Complete and JSTOR are examples of general databases that contain information from multiple disciplines. This multi-discipline database is geared towards disciplines generally studied in associate degree or certificate programs. It includes resources for journalism.

You can browse journals group specific subject area, like communication and cultural studies or use the advanced search options to find articles covering a specific topic.

Communication & Mass Media Complete

Citations, abstracts and full text of articles from scholarly journals in communication studies are available through this database.

 

Dow Jones Factiva

This database contains articles from national and international newspapers. 

 

NewsBank

Provides access to regional and national newspapers, along with some international news sources.

 

Newspaper Source Plus

Contains full text selected full text for over 500 national and international newspapers. It also contains full-text transcripts of television and radio news.
