Representative Reference Sources for Chemistry

When doing a literature search in Chemistry, start by establishing a basic understanding of the terms and concepts in the field.  Reference books such as dictionaries, handbooks, manuals and encyclopedias are great sources for this type of information.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics                                R 540 C911 2004

Provides broad coverage of data commonly used in the physical sciences in a concise one-volume format.  It is a standard resource for scientists, engineers and students.

A Dictionary of Chemistry                                                             Online

Provides concise definitions of chemical terms from all areas of chemistry. Part of the Oxford Reference Online Premium collection.

Encyclopedia Britannica                                                                 Online

An online version of the popular print encyclopedia, it is a great source for basic information in multiple subject areas.

Encyclopedia of Spectroscopy                                                     R 543.0858 P477e 1995

Covers terms and concepts related to spectroscopy and spectrum analysis.

Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary                             R 540.73 C745 1993

Provides identification of chemical substances by name, physical properties, source of occurrence, CAS number, chemical formula and a variety of other criteria.

Inorganic Syntheses                                                                       R 541.39 I58 1939-

An ongoing series providing detailed procedures for the preparation of inorganic compounds.  There is a cumulative index to the first thirty volumes.

Lange’s Handbook of Chemistry                                                 R 540.212 L274 1992

Includes properties of organic and inorganic compounds.  Complements the CRC Handbook to provide comprehensive coverage of basic information in chemistry.

Macmillan Encyclopedia of Chemistry                                     R 540.3 M167 1997

Covers the full scope of the chemical sciences for non-specialists, presenting over 700 articles written at a level appropriate for undergraduate students.

McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Chemical Terms                           R 540.3 M147 1985

Brief, concise definitions of terms used in chemistry.

Finding Books and Other Items in the Library

To find books and other resources on chemistry in our general collection, start by going to the ALEX online catalog and searching by subject.  If a subject search is not successful, searching by keyword broadens your search and retrieves more information.

Resources for Finding Articles on Chemistry

For the latest information from authoritative sources, use scholarly journals.  Online library databases like Academic Search Complete and JSTOR are examples of general databases that contain information from multiple disciplines. The following databases are other examples, typically more specific in nature, that contain information geared towards this discipline.

ACS Web Editions

Full text online access to journals published by the American Chemical Society.

Annual Review of Biochemistry

Annual compilation of review articles in the field of biochemistry.  Full text is available from 1997 to the present.

Annual Review of Physical Chemistry

Annual compilation of review articles in the field of physical chemistry.  Full text is available from 1997 to the present.

Wiley InterScience (Formerly Blackwell Synergy)

You can browse by subject area, like chemistry or use the advanced search option to find articles covering a specific topic.

OMNIFILE/MEGA

Choose either the Applied Science and Technology or the General Science subject area for citations, abstracts and full texts of scholarly journals and magazines in chemistry.

STN

The main database for access to chemistry research. Contact the Chemistry department for information on accessing this resource.

Journal Finder

If you are having trouble finding the full text of a journal, Journal Finder can help point you towards the right database.

Web Resources in Chemistry

There is a great variety of web sites that might be useful; the following are a few suggestions. For more web resources in this area, check out the library's delicious page of websites.

Bridgewater College’s Chemistry Department

This is the home page for the Chemistry Department at Bridgewater College.

Directory of Open Access Journals

Open access journals are e-journals that offer free full-text access. This site indexes open access journals that are refereed or peer-reviewed.

E-Journals.org

This site indexes e-journals from a variety of disciplines. Some are international, so they may not be in English. Full-text is usually only available through a subscription to the journal.

NIST virtual library [chemistry]

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has created a collection of online resources, thematically arranged.

Organic Chemistry Resources Worldwide

Provides an organized set of links for resources in organic chemistry, including those helpful for both students and professional chemists.

Periodic Table of Videos

From the University of Nottingham, on this site each element has an associated video containing information about the specific element and showing different experiments illustrating different characteristics.

Scirus

A searchable index of citations from journals and web sites in all areas of science. Most article citations will provide access to abstracts, but not free access to full text online.
